Mourning another WW2 hero

Joachim Ronneburg has passed away.  Never heard of him? Neither have I until recently. Ronneburg was a Norwegian commando who destroyed the heavy water station that the Nazis were using for their nuclear program. German scientists had chosen to use heavy water, or water that has more protons than regular H20, as their research path. The Allies needed to stop that program. They had tried once and failed. The British could not use heavy bombers for fear of killing Norwegians. Besides, that place was hard to reach from the air.

Enter Ronneburg. Although he did not know it, he and his team were about to do would have long term strategy value to the war.

I had already posted earlier about Sergeant Donald Malarkey’s passing, he of the Band of Brothers fame. It’s to honor another one.
